Gemma Ward (born November 3, 1987 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia) is an Australian supermodel and actress. One of the most celebrated models in the world, she is considered a model of the moment by many fashion insiders and fans alike, with her baby doll-like look inspiring a new craze in fashion.
Early life
Ward was born in Perth, Western Australia, as the second child of Gary and Claire Ward. Her older sister, Sophie, is also a model and she has younger twin brothers, Oscar and Henry Ward. When she was 15 years old, she was discovered in the audience of the "Search for a Supermodel", an Australian television show. As said herself in a Teen Vogue interview, she accompanied her friends to a modeling competition and ended up being scouted herself. Ward didn't win the competition, but Vivens Model Agency picked her up, and then after seeing a small picture of her in an Australian magazine New York's IMG.
Career
Gemma Ward started her model career in the year 2002. At just sixteen, Ward was the youngest model chosen to be in a Vogue shoot of nine "It Girls" in the modeling world, which also included fellow supermodels Daria Werbowy, Natalia Vodianova and Karolína Kurková. She has been in campaigns from Jil Sander to Yves Saint-Laurent, and has been in shows for designers such as Versace, Gucci, Chanel, Valentino, Alexander McQueen, and many more.
In September 2004, at the age of 16, Ward became the youngest fashion model on the cover of the American edition of Vogue and was the the first model to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue magazine. She is the first model since Kate Moss to be the face for Calvin Klein's perfume "Obsession Night for Men" along with male model, Drew Keilt.
Ward is currently considered a model of the moment by many fashion insiders and fans alike, having been described at times of having an out-of-this-world look.
Gemma Ward currently lives in New York and is close friends with fellow models Marissa Johnson, Lily Donaldson, Caroline Winberg, Daria Werbowy, and Lily Cole. Marissa Johnson, heiress to Johnson & Johnson fortune and Ward have been friends since Ward entered the modeling industry.
Ward's baby doll-like look inspired a new craze in fashion. Fashion designer Lazaro Hernandez tells Teen Vogue (February 2006), "She looked like no one else at the time. She was this alien, and fashion is always looking for newness." Her look became the popular new look among models. It has inspired a new generation of baby doll-like models such as Vlada Roslyakova, Heather Marks, and Jessica Stam.
Gemma Ward has long aspired to pursue acting and drama is a passion that she has held since she was a child. She has been cast in Australian director Elissa Down's upcoming film 'The Black Balloon' also starring Toni Collette and Rhys Wakefield, as the girlfriend of a boy whose brother has autism. She was recently cast opposite Liv Tyler in the suspense thriller "The Strangers" as one of the three masked intruders. She also appeared in the musical video "Daughters" by John Mayer.
In addition to English, Gemma speaks fluent French, Italian and Spanish, as well as some Portuguese, German, Japanese and Dutch learned on her travels. Is a fan of Bob Marley. One of her favorite places to visit is Sardinia.
