Scarlett Johansson Biography

Early life

Johansson was born in New York City. Her father, Karsten Johansson, was born in Denmark and her paternal grandfather, Ejner Johansson, was a screenwriter and director; her mother, Melanie Sloan, comes from a Bronx-bred Jewish American family, and met Karsten Johansson while living in Denmark with Scarlett's maternal grandmother, Dorothy, a former bookkeeper and schoolteacher. Johansson has an older sister, Vanessa, who is also an actress, a brother, Adrian, a twin brother, Hunter, and a half-brother, Christian. Johansson graduated from The Professional Children's School in Manhattan in 2002.

Career

Johansson's roles include Grace MacLean in The Horse Whisperer (which was credited as her film debut), Rebecca in Ghost World, Charlotte in Lost in Translation, Griet in Girl with a Pearl Earring, Francesca in The Perfect Score and Nola in Match Point. All of these performances garnered positive critical notice. She was nominated for two best actress awards at the Golden Globes in 2003, one for drama (Girl with a Pearl Earring) and one for comedy (Lost in Translation). She was also nominated for best actress for both of those films at the BAFTAs, and won best actress for Lost in Translation. Johansson is also the voice of Princess Mindy in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

Scarlett was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in June 2004. Also in 2004, she starred in A Love Song for Bobby Long, a film that, despite being widely ignored by the movie-going public (grossing only $964,308 worldwide), earned Scarlett a third Golden Globe Award nomination.

In July 2005, Johansson starred with Ewan McGregor in the Michael Bay-directed The Island. It was her debut as the female lead in a mainstream action film. She drew some attention when she mentioned that she'd wanted to film the sex scene in the film topless (she hadn't liked the bra the wardrobe department had given her) but director Michael Bay disapproved, wanting to turn in a PG-13 film. When the movie opened to weak reviews and an even weaker box office, the producers of the film accused Johansson of failing to connect with or attract a mainstream audience.

Johansson was featured in an advertisement campaign for the Calvin Klein perfume "Moment". She has also modeled for the French luxury brand Louis Vuitton and in January 2006 was signed to L'Oreal .Her film Match Point, directed by Woody Allen, opened in December of 2005. Johansson received a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe nomination for her performance, her fourth, though the award went to Rachel Weisz, for her role in The Constant Gardener.

Johansson was featured nude on the cover of the February 2006 issue of Vanity Fair magazine, with Keira Knightley. In March of 2006, she topped the US edition of FHM's poll of the sexiest women alive (in the UK edition, Keira Knightley was first with Johansson in third), and responded to the news by saying that she was flattered to be thought sexy.

Johansson took place in an anti-poverty campaign which was organized by U2 lead singer, Bono.

In 2006, Johansson starred in a short film directed by Bennett Miller and set to Bob Dylan's "When the Deal Goes Down...", released to promote Dylan's album, Modern Times. Between 2005 and 2006, she also sang the track "Summertime" for Unexpected Dreams - Songs from the Stars, a non-profit collection of songs recorded by Hollywood actors, and was in talks to appear in a stage version of The Sound of Music.

Johansson's most recent role is in the thriller The Prestige, which opened on October 20, 2006. She has also completed filming on the yet be released film version of The Nanny Diaries along side Alicia Keys, and has been cast opposite Natalie Portman and Eric Bana in The Other Boleyn Girl, playing Mary Boleyn, the sister of Portman's character. Filming is scheduled to begin in London in October 2006 for a 2007 release. Johansson will also play Mary, Queen of Scots, in a film scheduled to begin production by the end of summer 2007.

Personal life

On several occasions, Johansson has claimed to be addicted to cheese, saying "My greatest vice is cheese. Nothing else reigns over my life." (The Observer Magazine December 28, 2003). She campaigned for John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential Election.

Johansson has revealed that she has no problem with her male co-stars seeing her breasts, as she considers them to be her favourite feature. "I'm proud of my girls. They're my charms, my feminine wiles," she said in a January 2005 interview for Harper's Bazaar.

She strongly dislikes when journalists ask about her religion; hence, it's not clear. In Marie Claire (UK) - September 2005 she was asked "Are you religious?" Scarlett answered "That's a very personal question. I would rather not answer." However, she has been quoted as saying that she dislikes it when celebrities thank God or Jesus in their award acceptance speeches and is quoted as saying that her parents are atheists (although her father's family was originally Christian and her mother's originally Jewish).

February, 2007, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals of Harvard University has announced that Ben Stiller and Scarlett Johansson are the recipients of the 2007 Man and Woman of the Year awards. Playboy chose Scarlett Johansson #1 as their top sexiest celebrity of the year 2007 list.
